Why historical OCR is difficult

Historical documents are often difficult for OCR because of faded ink, unusual typefaces, handwriting, damaged pages, old spelling, stains, low contrast, page curvature, stamps, and uneven scans.

OCR can help create a rough draft from visible printed text, but it does not guarantee accuracy. Treat the output as a starting point for transcription, not a reliable final record.

Work in small sections

Crop one paragraph, column, or page area at a time. Smaller sections are easier to review and correct than a full page of mixed text, marks, and margins.

Keep the original image linked to the corrected text so future readers can verify uncertain words. If the page is curved, stained, or very low contrast, try a clearer photo or scan before trusting the result.

Always compare with the original

Check names, dates, places, spelling, punctuation, and line breaks against the original document. Old typefaces and damaged letters can cause OCR to substitute similar-looking characters.

Do not rely on the extracted text alone for citations, family history records, archive notes, or research conclusions.

Ethical and source notes

Historical documents can still contain personal, cultural, or community-sensitive information. Handle and share extracted text with care.

Record archive references, collection names, dates, and any uncertainty in the transcription.

FAQ

Can OCR read old handwriting?

Not reliably. The OCR tool is better suited to clear printed text. Historical handwriting should be treated as a manual transcription task with careful human review.
