How to Extract Text From a Screenshot

Use screenshot OCR when the information is visible on screen but cannot be selected. Typical examples include app messages, error codes, booking details, payment confirmations, address text, and copied snippets from a website or dashboard.

If the same information is already in a PDF with selectable text, use PDF to Text instead. Screenshot OCR is strongest when the source is an image of clear digital text.

Crop the screenshot before extraction if it includes notifications, open tabs, unrelated buttons, or private names. OCR reads visible words, so a full-screen capture can produce cluttered output.

For phone screenshots, zoom in before taking the capture when the text is small. For desktop screenshots, capture the content area instead of the entire monitor.

After extraction, check numbers, addresses, dates, order references, and code snippets. These details are the most useful, but they are also where one wrong character can matter.
